Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

Tina bit her bottom lip and said softly, unsure about Bette’s reaction, "How would you feel if. . . would you even consider . . . adoption?  I mean, ideally, I’d love to have another baby and to experience everything I missed, but . . . there are just so many children out there who need good homes."

Bette turned to her and listened.

Tina went on.  "I was reading an article in the Times last week about all of these poor children from Louisiana and Mississippi who have been left orphans after Katrina.  I mean, a few weeks ago, they had normal lives and now they’re pretty much homeless."

Bette had been reading about it, too.  Katrina was shameful.  It was a permanent scar on the nation of opportunity and streets paved with gold.  Where was the help?  Where was the love for its citizens?  "Yeah?"

"There are these agencies seeking homes for these kids temporarily, until they can locate relatives.  Or, you know what?  We could adopt from LA.  There are lots of kids here waiting for loving parents.  When I was working at the Center for Social Justice, Oscar was always telling me about a child desperate for a good home."

Bette nodded.  "Funny, we’ve never talked about it, but I think it’s a wonderful idea, Tee.  I really do."  She wasn’t adverse to this and frankly, it would mean that Tina wouldn’t go through a pregnancy.  "I’m all for it, Tina.  I am.  I feel like I’ve changed a lot over the past year.  Maybe it’s the Buddhist readings I’ve done or that retreat, but I’m honestly beginning to see that greater connection between myself and everyone.  Right now, I don’t feel that it’s enough to just write a check.  That’s how I lived my life–toss some money at the problems.  My parents were such activists, but that was never my style.  But adoption isn’t so much about being an activist, but it does seem like the right thing to do.  Adoption sounds right," she said honestly.

Tina leaned to her right, moved her hand up Bette’s arm and held it on her shoulder while kissing her on the lips.  "I’m right there with you, baby," she said when she pulled away.  "And anyway, just because we adopt doesn’t mean that having another child of our own should be off the table completely.  I’ll be ovulating soon, then again around Christmas.  It would have been kind of cool to have gotten pregnant on Christmas night–my gift to you."

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
