Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

    "Bette."

"She did, Tina.  My mom had come and gone a few times.  She had even said more than once that it was really over, but she always came back and the reconciliations were always so wonderful.  When they were together and not fighting, my life was perfect.  She left when I was ten, but came back and stayed.  But the year I turned thirteen, well, Christmas was a disaster.  New Years Eve was horrific.  I never knew what happened.  It was right after that special trip to New York for my birthday and holiday shopping–when we saw Ruth and Mo at the theatre.  I know that now.  I can still hear the shouting."  Bette actually turned, put her elbows on the computer desk, and covered her ears for a moment.

Tina reached for her, rubbed her back, and whispered softly, "That was a long time ago, Bette.  Don’t go back there.  It hurts."

Bette inhaled so slowly, held that breath, and let it out before she turned to Tina.  Her eyes were watery.  "It does hurt.  I needed her to stay.  I did.  Daddy begged her to stay because we needed her, but she was in pain.  She kept telling Daddy she couldn’t take the pain."

Tina nodded.  She understood that.  She had never stopped loving Bette, but those lonely nights when Tina had driven past their home, sometimes seeing Bette’s car and sometimes not seeing it had been painful.  The depth of betrayal seemed like a bottomless pit.  She had still loved her, but the pain of it kept her from walking up the path, up the steps, onto the porch, back into their home.  Tina knew what Maxine must have gone through.

"And-and after the break-up, everything was a competition–I’ve told you about this before.  It-it was a competition mostly on Daddy’s part.  Mom gave me her father’s Argus camera, then Daddy gave me the old Rolleiflex, twin lens camera that his father had owned.  Mom bought a horse for me that was kept at the stable.  I could ride it when I visited her.  So when I went off to college, Daddy bought me a Volvo.  He said Mom contributed, but later he made a point of saying he had purchased it.  It was constant pulling from both sides and it was because of Ruth Moskowitz," she said Ruth’s name with incredible disdain, pure revulsion.

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
