Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

"Your father made a mistake, but look what you got out of that."

"Yeah, a broken home."  Bette sighed.  "You know," Bette began, "I know this is an awful thing to say.  Just horrible.  Really, I’m ashamed to even-even think it let alone tell you. . ."

    "What?"

"Since reading that letter Daddy left me where he explained about that one night he had with Ruth Moskowitz.  You know, at the March in Mississippi?  Well, as much as I care for Mo–and I do–I really do care for him as my half-brother and-and-and as a part of me. . ."

    "But. . .?"

"The truth is, I’ve thought more than a few times, ‘if only the local police or racist state troopers had seen Daddy going into her hotel room–a white woman’s room, they would have roughed him up a little, maybe and he never would have had the opportunity to. . .’"  Bette chewed on her bottom lip, then said, "to-to do something that he regretted for the rest of his life.  An innocent visit to a friend’s hotel room would have just turned into a bad evening in the local jail and Daddy would have written some irate article for Crisis magazine or something,” Bette said about the NAACP’s monthly publication.  “He and the organization would have gotten a few stories out of it, but that’s it."  She lowered her head and rubbed her forehead.  Bette really was embarrassed and more than a little shocked that not only could she have such a strong and hateful thought, but she dared voice it.  She shook her head.  "I mean, really, I wouldn’t have wanted my father beaten. . ."

"Or killed.  They’d just as soon have killed him as beat him.”  Tina was surprised to hear such a comment come from Bette and she couldn’t hide her dismay when she looked at her.  “They could have shot him dead or lynched him for that."

Bette shook her head.  "I know.  I know.  It’s just the worst thought.  God, I know, I know, I know, I know."  She frowned.  "To even think that.  I’m . . . shit, Tina, I’m all muddled about it.  I want something still that I clearly can never have.  I can’t get back those years.  Mom’s dead.  Daddy’s dead.   The reality is I have another sibling.  I know all of these thoughts are fantasy-based.  When it comes to this–my parents and our lives together, I-I-I still feel like a child; I still grieve for something that ended long ago."

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
