Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

"Our gift to each other," Bette looked dreamily at Tina.

"Well, it doesn’t matter.  We could find someone within the next month or two or not.  Could be this just isn’t the right time in terms of a decent selection, but maybe next time we’ll see a ton more African-American men."  Tina tilted her head.  "Bette?"

    Bette nodded.

"I know you don’t want to talk about it, but I just want to understand everything and I’m not trying to sway you, okay?  I’m not trying to change your mind, just figure out how you’re processing it."

Bette knew she had to answer this question.  Immediately, her hand wrapped around the top of the computer’s mouse.  It was her plan to act like the question hadn’t been asked.  Bette wondered if Kit had even told Tina.  They talked all the time.  Kit could have told her what she had said about Mo.  Should she put the truth out there or just act nonchalant?   "Hmmm?" she said casually.

"Why not Mo?”  Tina’s head rocked left and right as it did when she was especially nervous.  “I remember how you told your father a few years ago that the donor would be African-American so that we would all see something of ourselves in our baby.  Melvin is really a part of Mo.  You know he is.  You and Mo look identical; you’re heavily Porters.  It seems like Maxine and his mother didn’t have a lot to do with it.  When you look at the baby, you might see your father and you’d know for sure that your Dad would be a part of her or him."

"Tina, it’s a short answer."  Bette let go of the mouse and shifted in her chair to look at her.  "I’ll tell you what I told Kit.  I-I-I don’t think that I could love that child the way I love Angelica if it came out looking like Ruth Moskowitz and not Mo or Daddy.  Every time the child back-talked or said something that pissed me off, I’d think about what Daddy wrote in his last letter to me about, you know, how Ruthie was so opinionated and would argue with anyone about anything.  I’d think oh, the kid’s acting like a Moskowitz, acting like the woman who destroyed the lives of at least three people."

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
