Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

Bette faced Tina, listening, trying to accept the genetics of their families.  It would be easier if she could accept Mo’s offer.  She seriously doubted they’d get what they wanted at any sperm bank in San Diego or San Francisco.  They were selective, just like each of them would have been picky choosing a husband to father their children if they were heterosexual.

“Bette, Angelica looks like you.  She smiles just like you, baby.  She moves her eyes in the same way you move yours when you’re searching for me.”

Bette stared at her and her eyes danced as her gaze told Tina she had taken it in and that her decision regarding Mo was not etched in stone.  “You’re right.  I’ll think about it.  I can’t say I’ll change my mind, but I will think about it.”

“That’s all we can ask.”  Tina sipped from her glass of Pelligrino and thought about her task for tomorrow.  She would start looking into adoption–private and county-sponsored.  Tina would have to fit that in sometime between taking Angelica to her music class and one last rehearsal with Kit and Angus before they left for the wedding.  She also had to pick clothes up from the cleaners and begin the packing.  Tomorrow would be full, but tonight, she told herself would be fun.

"What about your job?" Tina said, changing the subject.  "How was life at CU today?"

"Sucked.  Every day, it’s just a deluge.  I feel like all I have to do is to reach above my head. . ."  She mimed it, lifting her arm overhead and then yanking down hard. ". . . and pull the chain and the shit just comes down.  It’s like I have a fucking shit chain over me, following me across campus and in my office.  I told you about that student and the fake gun, right?"

    Tina nodded.

"Well, Jodi Lerner seems to be bewildered about how that could be a problem and now to appease me, she’s invited us to this dinner."

Tina’s eyes searched Bette’s for a glimmer of betrayal.  Did Bette want to spend time with this woman?  Her mind kept going back to the day they met her in Big Bear; when Angelica had just been rescued and Bette had stopped to talk to the artist.  Bette had been so impressed by her. Also Lerner had wanted Bette to use the deaf communications service at home, the TTY machine.  She was trying to ensconce herself in Bette’s life.  Tina didn’t like it.

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
