Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

"We can’t go, of course.  It’s this weekend, but even if it was some other time.  I so don’t want to spend an evening with her."

    "Why?"

Bette snorted.  "I would find it. . . frankly. . . excruciating.  I mean, making conversation when all I’d really want to do is be home alone with you . . . that would be excruciating.  Having to pretend I’m interested and making small talk with a bunch of women I don’t know and a couple of faculty I can’t stand. "

    "They’re your faculty."

"Don’t remind me.  I’ve been told.  Phyllis Kroll has made me painfully aware that I’m responsible for these egotists."

"When you meet with the faculty do they make any attempt at getting along?"

    "None."

    "That does suck."

"I mean, Phyllis Kroll isn’t an evil bitch or anything.  She respects me, but this university life is kind of crazy.  You know, I’ve-I’ve heard students and faculty talking about ‘real life’ and they mean outside the walls of the Ivory Tower, but I always thought, uh-uh, they’re wrong.  This is real life, too.  But it isn’t.  It’s-it’s. . ."  Bette looked up, searched her mind for the word.  "A world inside the real world.  It has everything you need inside the boundaries of the campus.  You don’t have to really seek anything out; it’s all there and when someone comes along and tweaks with what they consider their utopian world, it’s hell.  This sub-culture is kind of, I don’t know, precarious.  It doesn’t take much to send it over the edge, make it question things, so they have to figure out ways to stabilize it even if it means preventing real discussion, debate, growth, change–to me, the true purpose of academia.  Fascists.  You know what it reminds me of?"

    "What?"

"That Golding book, Lord of the Flies."

"The kids who end up stranded on some island?"

"Right.  It’s like that–the leaders, the followers, the doers, the scapegoat, the backstabbing, and a belief in some imaginary foe.  It’s gonna get bloody."

"Jeez, Bette.  That does not sound good."

    "I fucking walk on eggshells."

"What are you going to do?"

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
