Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

    “Mo?”

“I guess I wouldn’t want somebody showing up in my life rocking the boat, either.”

“First, let me say this about that–you did not rock the boat with me. . . or her.  I am happy.  That’s some good news from Mel-Daddy for once.  You shouldn’t even be thinkin’ like that, you know what I’m sayin’?  It’s not that.”  This was Bette’s problem.  She and Mo got along fine.  Bette would need to deal with him and deal with her when she was ready, but she wasn’t going to force it.  “We’re not gonna be around for a few days.  We’re all goin’ to Canada for a wedding, so you might not hear from her this week at all.  Aw right?"

    "Whatever."

    "Don’t be like that."

"I’ve been trying.  I really have.  Sending pictures, sharing my life with Daddy, so you guys could see that side of it.  The videos.  I’ve tried."

"Bette is Bette.  Don’t be so defensive."

"Yeah, okay.”  Mo thought Kit didn’t understand.  She did, though.  Melvin had put all three of them in impossible situations at different times in their lives.  She thought about how he had said on one of his last day’s on earth that it was human nature to pursue one’s happiness over someone else’s misery.  Boy, he meant it.  It had always been about Daddy’s personal happiness.  He didn’t care that he had broken her heart and her mother’s heart; he didn’t care that Maxine never felt confident in their marriage; he certainly pushed Bette beyond reason because it made him proud and happy to show her off to her friends.  He’d no doubt done the same to Clayton, and then his dying wish was that Clayton do what he had been too much of a coward to do while he was alive—introduce all of his children to each other.

    “It’s after one there, huh?”

“Yeah.  I need to get some sleep.  Just called to tell you the music’s great.  Goodnight, Kit.”

“Later, Mo.”  Kit hung up the phone and stared at the receiver for a moment before turning to Angus.  "Sorry about that."  She touched one of the appetizers.  "They’re cold."

    "That’s okay.  Daddy’s hot."

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
